MLA Tom Shypitka urges NDP to call wildlife bill for debate

VICTORIA (November 23, 2022) – Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka is renewing his call for the NDP government to bring forward his private member’s bill — the Wildlife Amendment Act — for debate before the end of the fall legislative session. This bill would lay the groundwork for a new independent funding model for wildlife and habitat management and ensure the long-term sustainability of our wildlife populations.

“Since I introduced this bill on June 1, 2022 – this bill has garnered significant support from many hunting groups, wildlife and habitat coalitions and conservationists from across British Columbia, with support continuing to grow,” said Shypitka. “The work has already been done and all that is needed is for government to call the bill for debate.”

The proposed model would be eligible to receive funding and revenue from all levels of government, including municipal, provincial, federal, and Indigenous. If implemented, 100 per cent of contributions earned from purchasing licences — as well as fees from hunting and other forms of land use, such as stakeholder groups, philanthropy, and industry — would be used only for wildlife and habitat management.

“We want to protect our local wildlife populations and restore the diverse ecosystems for which we are known across the world. The current practices continue to put our wildlife in danger. Wildlife is one of our most precious resources here in B.C. and we must do everything in our power to manage their populations effectively,” added Shypitka. “This proposed funding model will ensure decisions on regulations are science-based and in the best interest of local wildlife and all those who depend on our province’s natural environments.”

Shypitka will continue to work with groups across the province to bring them this important message and encourage people to sign his petition for this important change.
