BC Liberal statement on Multiculturalism Week

VICTORIA (November 21, 2022) – Richmond North Centre MLA Teresa Wat, Official Opposition Critic for Tourism, Arts and Culture and Multiculturalism, released the following statement for Multiculturalism Week:

“British Columbia marks Multiculturalism Week during the third week of each November to celebrate the rich cultural mosaic that our province is today. As the most culturally diverse province in Canada, B.C. is home to more than 200 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples and residents who trace their origins to more than 200 countries or regions.

“During Multiculturalism Week, we also recognize the many significant contributions made to society by diverse communities, which make our province better.

“This week is also a reminder of the racism, unconscious bias, discrimination, and hatred faced by Indigenous Peoples and other communities based on ethnicity, religion, culture, and language. The rise in anti-Asian hate during the COVID-19 pandemic is a recent example. These realities remind us there is more work that needs to be done.

“Throughout Multiculturalism Week and beyond, let’s re-commit to building and maintaining an inclusive province where all British Columbians can fully and freely participate in social, economic, cultural and political life.

“I look forward to celebrating diversity and inclusion during Multiculturalism Week.”
