Victoria (November 16, 2022) – Michael Lee, the MLA for Vancouver-Langara and Official Opposition Critic for Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation has issued the following statement to mark Louis Riel Day:
“Today, we join the Metis Nation and all Canadians to commemorate the life of Louis Riel, a fearless Métis leader, politician, and founder of the Province of Manitoba.
“Louis Riel was a courageous and impassioned defender of minority rights and an important historic figure who contributed to Canadian Confederation. Today, we recognize a man who fought hard for a more diverse and more inclusive country.
“As we commemorate Louis Riel, we also acknowledge the intergenerational impacts caused by the injustices and racism that the Métis— and Indigenous peoples — have faced and continue to face today.
“To continue our journey of reconciliation, I encourage everyone today to honour the Métis people and recognize their many contributions to Canada.”
