BC Liberal statement on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

VICTORIA (September 30, 2022) – Leader of the Official Opposition Kevin Falcon and MLA Michael Lee, BC Liberal Critic for Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, released the following joint statement today to commemorate Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:

“Today we recognize Orange Shirt Day and our country’s second annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is an important time to reflect on the racism and injustices faced by many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people in Canada, including the dark legacy of residential schools.

“And with that reflection, we must also acknowledge the intergenerational impacts on Indigenous Nations, families, and communities present in society today and witness and honour the families and survivors of that difficult history.

“It is also an important occasion to recognize the contributions of First Nations here in B.C., reaffirm our commitment to meaningful reconciliation, and encourage all Canadians to join in this journey of healing, learning, and progress.

“Reconciliation requires that we shine a light on the past while also looking forward; striving to work together to build a brighter future for everyone who calls this land home.

“We must learn to walk in a good and humble way, working to forge stronger relationships with Indigenous peoples built on the foundations of trust, transparency and reconciliation.

“Our BC Liberal Caucus hopes that all British Columbians will join us in recognizing this important day, listening to Indigenous voices, working towards meaningful reconciliation, and thinking seriously about how we can shape a better future by working to achieve opportunity and prosperity for all.”
