BC Liberal statement on July’s Illicit Drug Toxicity Report

VICTORIA (September 15, 2022) – Trevor Halford, Official Opposition Critic for Mental Health and Addictions, has released the following statement on July’s BC Coroners Illicit Drug Toxicity Report:

“I extend my deepest condolences to the friends and family of the 192 people who tragically lost their lives to toxic drugs in July.

“This represents a staggering 31 per cent increase over the number of deaths reported the previous month.

“It’s deeply disheartening to watch this tragic crisis continue, as people in our province continue to die at an alarming rate. In July alone, we lost an average of six people per day — people who were parents, children, siblings, friends and loved ones.

“Despite this crisis being declared a public health emergency more than six years ago, the situation continues to worsen under the NDP government’s watch.

“Made worse, the NDP continue to disregard the urgent recommendations of the BC Coroners Service Death Review Panel from earlier this year and they have yet to even accept the validity of the expert recommendations.

“We are in dire need of a comprehensive strategy to approach this crisis that is coherent and encompasses the entire province. When any British Columbian reaches out, they should immediately be able to get the help they need.

“The NDP needs to change their approach to this crisis and start taking significant and effective action. Lives need to be saved, and this tragic trend must be stopped.”
