VICTORIA (May 12, 2022) – The BC Liberals are raising the alarm about the worsening shortage of baby formula sweeping across North America. Despite growing concern from parents, the NDP government has yet to take steps to ensure formula remains in stock on B.C. shelves.
“This shortage is a serious issue, the effects of which we are beginning to see in B.C., with many new parents already reporting seeing empty shelves,” said Surrey-White Rock MLA Trevor Halford. “Parents want and deserve to know what this NDP government is doing to ensure access to baby formula remains accessible and in good supply. Government must immediately address these supply chain issues that are anticipated to worsen and provide people with assurance they will be able to continue feeding their babies.”
Representatives from the Retail Council of Canada say that we’ve been dealing with shortages of specialized formulas for almost nine months, but recently supply issues have worsened significantly. Some retailers in the United States have already begun limiting the amount of formula customers can purchase in an attempt to keep it in stock.
“The NDP must take real steps to address the formula shortage before the situation becomes critical,” said Halford. “This is about the health and well-being of B.C. children, and families simply cannot afford for this government to delay action.”
