PRINCE GEORGE (December 1, 2021) – Interim Leader of the Official Opposition Shirley Bond released the following statement in recognition of World AIDS Day:
“Over 36 million people around the world have lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses.
“Today on World AIDS Day, and during Indigenous AIDS Awareness Week, we remember those lost, raise awareness, and show our support for those currently living with HIV/AIDS.
“We must also recommit to continuing the fight against HIV/AIDS and to ending the stigma that still surrounds the virus today that impacts the nearly 10,000 British Columbians currently living with HIV.
“British Columbia has long been a leader in HIV research, both in the search for a cure as well as investigating effective treatments and prevention. Much progress has been made since AIDS was first identified four decades ago, but there is still much more work to be done.
“On behalf of the BC Liberal Caucus, I want to extend our gratitude to all the researchers, doctors, nurses, and organizations who are searching for a cure and working to support those living with HIV and AIDS.
“Let’s continue to work together in the fight against HIV/AIDS as our world strives to put an end to this virus by 2030.”
