Horgan stops snubbing some veterans but continues to snub others

VICTORIA (June 3, 2021) – MLA for Abbotsford South and Opposition Critic for Citizens’ Services Bruce Banman is asking John Horgan why — when he finally offered Legions pandemic relief funding a month after they asked him for it — he’s choosing to exclude other key veterans’ organizations like the Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans in Canada (ANAVETS).

“It’s absolutely astounding how this Premier continues to bungle the rollout of these supports for our veterans,” said Banman. “Not only did it take him more than a month to act after the Royal Canadian Legion wrote to him on April 30 — we asked specifically about ANAVETS funding in the Legislature several times, and the Premier still excluded them from COVID relief.”

ANAVETS supports more than 18,000 members across Canada, assisting veterans through a variety of programs and services. The organization also maintains museums and operates many of clubs, homes and meeting places of veterans and active-duty members of the Canadians Armed Forces. When it was revealed that ANAVETS were excluded from the NDP relief funding, they wrote a letter to BC Liberal MLAs Bruce Banman and Mike De Jong expressing their disappointment in John Horgan’s decision and called on the Provincial Government to help them overcome many of the financial constraints and challenges brought on by the pandemic.
