Discriminatory NDP policy costs British Columbians millions

VANCOUVER (January 3, 2020) – BC Liberal Critic for Labour John Martin and Delta South MLA Ian Paton are once again calling out the NDP for putting British Columbians on the hook for a massive project-cost increase after today’s announcement that contractors have been selected for the Pattullo Bridge replacement.

“Just three days into 2020 we are already being reminded of the NDP’s shady, taxpayer-bankrolled Community Benefits Agreement scheme,” said Martin, MLA for Chilliwack. “This project will cost British Columbians taxpayers an extra $100 million just so the NDP can pay off their union friends and insiders — that’s money that could have been spent on building affordable housing or providing childcare, to name a few unfulfilled promises the NDP has made to British Columbians in the last two years.”

The NDP’s handpicked union-only Community Benefits Agreement framework is already responsible for a 7% budget increase to the Pattullo Bridge replacement project before shovels have even broken ground.

“In addition to highlighting the NDP’s fiscal mismanagement, this news once again draws attention to this government’s complete failure to take action on replacing the George Massey Tunnel,” said Paton. “John Horgan admitted that the Pattullo Bridge was a higher priority for his government, even though the Massey Tunnel is the worst traffic bottleneck in the province and is seismically unsafe. This is just another example of this government prioritizing NDP-held ridings at the expense of tens of thousands of daily commuters who are unfairly being forced to pay the price.”
