DAWSON CREEK (January 24, 2020) – Once again the caribou recovery plan is in shambles following the sudden resignation of NDP-appointed Community Liaison Blair Lekstrom and the complete withdrawal of the Peace River Regional District from the NDP’s Caribou Recovery Initiative.
“John Horgan and the NDP never had any intention to adopt the 14 recommendations presented to government last June,” says Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier. “The entire process has been nothing but a sham and only confirms that his government is not sincere in properly engaging local governments and communities.”
It is quite apparent now that the NDP are unwilling to compromise on the two partnership agreements they negotiated behind closed doors. Local governments and residents within the impacted areas have been voicing their concerns for several months but Horgan continues to pay lip service to the process and refuses to listen to any suggestions.
“People in rural British Columbia have lost all confidence in a government that deliberately misled local governments, businesses and even weekend snowmobilers,” says Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett. “The minister responsible, Doug Donaldson, has been absent from this file for over a year now, and there isn’t anyone who gives John Horgan and the NDP a shred of credibility moving forward. No one has any idea how this government is going to somehow correct a deeply flawed process.”
“We all deserve better and need to be listened to,” Bernier added. “I can assure you that this fight is not over. Premier Horgan hears rural voices all the time, but he just chooses to ignore them.”
