Martin troubled by homeless being discharged from hospital, sent to Chilliwack shelters

CHILLIWACK (March 7, 2019) – Chilliwack MLA John Martin says he has heard from Mayor Ken Popove about individuals with complex care needs being discharged from Surrey Memorial Hospital and sent to homeless shelters in his community. Martin raised the issue in Question Period today, asking NDP Health Minister Adrian Dix to address these disturbing reports.

“Chilliwack’s business, non-profit, and faith communities all go above and beyond to assist our community’s most vulnerable,” says Martin. “But our facilities simply aren’t equipped to serve recently discharged patients with serious mental and physical health concerns, or to meet the demands of surrounding communities like Surrey. It is completely unfair to patients, front-line workers, and Chilliwack residents alike to be put in this kind of situation. Minister Dix needs to put an immediate stop to this practice, but unfortunately wouldn’t commit to doing so today in the legislature.”
